The climate of the Mekong Delta

Traveling during the dry season allows you to fully enjoy your stay in the Mekong Delta!


In brief :

  • Dry season (mid-October to mid-May)

It is pleasant to travel to the Mekong Delta during the dry season between November and April. Average temperatures are around 25°C in January and can reach 28-32°C in April and May. The precipitation rate is low, which allows you to enjoy beautiful sunny weather throughout this period.

  • Rainy season (mid-May to early October)

Many monsoons occur between June and November. These heavy rains have resulted in a rise in water levels, which causes flooding throughout the Mekong Delta region. However, the latter are appreciated by the locals since they are synonymous with a future abundant harvest of rice, fruits and vegetables.

Even if it does not seem to be the ideal period, visiting the Mekong Delta during the rainy season allows you to discover the sites without too many tourist crowds. You will be able to discover the original floating markets without meeting many travelers, stroll peacefully between the small canals of the province of Ben Tre…


The specialties of the Mekong Delta

The cuisine of the Mekong Delta is known for its simple but original flavors and preparations, varied and different from the cuisine of the rest of the country.

With its typical magnificent floating markets, the Mekong Delta offers you a lot of specialties to taste absolutely, if you visit this beautiful and peaceful region.


Here are the specialties that can be found in the Mekong Delta.

✔ Le Lẩu Mắm (fondue with macerated fish)

Stew with macerated fish originates from Can Tho province which is considered a place of “white rice and clean water”. Lẩu Mắm is in first place in the list of food specialties in the Mekong Delta.

The main ingredient of this dish is macerated Siamese mud carp or basa fish from Chau Doc or An Giang provinces. The broth is cooked from coconut water, pork bones and macerated fish.

If you like hot pot in the Mekong Delta, you have a chance to try some rare vegetables like water lilies, common sesban flower, Sesbania grandiflora flower. These vegetables are rare and they are best to eat with a hot hotpot. It has become a traditional culture in the Mekong Delta where everyone gathers around the table to enjoy the hot hotpot and sip rice wine.


✔ Le Bún Cá (rice noodle soup with fish)

Fish noodle soup is one of the most popular foods in the Mekong Delta because locals like to eat noodle soup (it’s hot there and the noodles are cool to eat) and the Mekong gives them a lot of fish.

Unlike the Bún Cá of central Vietnam, the Bún Cá in the Mekong Delta is made from catfish living in the rice fields. The taste comes from the clear and hearty broth prepared from pig bones, snakehead bones, ginger and tomatoes.


✔ Le Cơm Tấm (fragrant rice)

In the Mekong Delta, Cơm Tấm is so popular that you can find it anywhere on the streets. The most famous Cơm Tấm is served with grilled pork chops but there are other delicious Cơm Tấm you should taste like Cơm Tấm with pork and egg tart, Cơm Tấm with pork skin finely shredded.

Cơm Tấm is cooked from fragrant rice which makes it different from steamed rice. This dish is a perfect blend of simple ingredients and well worth trying.


✔ Le Bánh Pía (pia cake)

Pía cake is a specialty food of Soc Trang province in the Mekong Delta. It’s sweet and rich enough to make you want to eat more and more. The crust of the Pía cake is made with wheat flour and tapioca flour. The filling is made from glutinous rice flour, salted duck egg, green bean paste and pork fat.
