My Tho is a city in southern Vietnam, capital of Tien Giang Province, located in the flat Mekong Delta region. The city is named after the My Tho River, which means beautiful (Mỹ) and reeds (Tho) and is 70 km from Ho Chi Minh City.

My Tho was founded in the 1680s by Chinese refugees fleeing Taiwan for political reasons. The region was then part of the Khmer empire and it was not annexed by Vietnam until the 18th century. In 1862, Emperor Tu Duc ceded My Tho and its surroundings to France.

Today, My Tho is a splendid starting point for exploring by canoe on the Mekong, to discover the neighboring islands.
